Porter, William Sydney, collection, 1888-1974.

The collection comprises a photostatic copy of a cover for a map of Webb County, Texas, illuminated by Porter as an employee of the General Land Office of the state of Texas in 1888; two original manuscript pages from an O. Henry story, "Stickney and the Necktie," published by Short Story Magazine in January 1911; and a 1974 reprint of a 1905 poster promoting his story, "Gift of the Magi."

O. Henry was born as William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro and moved to Texas for his health in 1882 where he became a ranch hand. Porter relocated to Austin, TX and worked as a pharmacists, served as draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a teller at First National Bank of Austin, and started a humorous weekly magazine, The Rolling Stone.
